Text Compare

How to use the Text Compare
- Paste the original text on the left and the modified text on the right.
- Review the highlighted lines and the counts of added, removed and modified lines.
- To compare a cleaned-up version, tidy the text in Text Cleaner first and send it here with Continue with….
Examples
How a few edits are reported
| Change | Reported as |
|---|---|
| A line only appears on the right | Added line |
| A line only appears on the left | Removed line |
| A removed line is directly followed by an added line | Modified line, with the changed characters highlighted |
| The same text with different line breaks (Windows, Unix, old Mac) | No difference |
Limitations
- The comparison is exact. It is case-sensitive and whitespace-sensitive, so a changed capital letter, an extra space or a tab all count as a difference. Tidy the texts in Text Cleaner first if you want to ignore spacing.
- Lines are matched in order. If you want to compare two lists regardless of order, sort both with Remove Duplicate Lines first.
- Inside a modified line the changed characters are highlighted, so you can see exactly what differs.
- When removed and added lines sit next to each other they are paired in order as modified lines. This pairing is only a display heuristic, so a pair is not proof that one line was edited into the other.
- A moved line appears as a removed line and an added line.
- A trailing line break ends the last line and does not count as an extra line. Windows, Unix and old Mac line breaks are treated alike.
- Highlights inside a modified line are skipped for very long lines, which then show line-level highlighting only.
- This tool does not export a unified patch.
Frequently asked questions
What does Text Compare show?
The lines that are added, removed or modified between two texts, side by side, with counts for each kind of change.
Is the comparison case-sensitive?
Yes. “Hello” and “hello” are different, and so are texts that only differ in spaces. Use Text Cleaner first if you want to ignore spacing.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. The comparison runs in your browser and neither text is sent to TextMora.
Can I compare very large texts?
Yes, the comparison runs in the background so the page stays responsive. Texts above 100,000 characters show a size warning and may take longer.
