Characters are counted as UTF-16 code units, so an emoji counts as two.
How to use the Word Counter
- Paste or type your text into the editor.
- Read the statistics, which update as you type. Pick a character limit, such as an SEO title or a short post, to see how much room is left.
- Clear the editor, or continue with another TextMora tool.
Examples
How the counts work for sample text
| Text | Result |
|---|---|
| don't and well-known | 2 words (apostrophes and hyphens inside a word count as one word) |
| Hello world. How are you? | 2 sentences, 5 words |
| One line\n\nAnother paragraph | 2 paragraphs, 3 lines |
| 😀 | 0 words, 2 characters (an emoji is two UTF-16 units) |
Limitations
- Characters are counted as UTF-16 code units, the way JavaScript counts string length, so some emoji and rare symbols count as two.
- The character limit uses that same count. Search engines and social networks may count some characters differently, and search results are cut off by pixel width, so treat 60 and 155 as a guide.
- Sentences are counted heuristically from the punctuation marks . ! and ?, so abbreviations such as “e.g.” can add extra sentences.
- A trailing line break ends the last line and does not create an extra empty line.
Frequently asked questions
How are words counted?
A word is a run of letters or numbers. An apostrophe or hyphen between letters or numbers stays inside the word, so “don't” and “well-known” are one word each. Standalone punctuation and emoji are not words.
Why do characters include spaces?
The Characters figure counts everything you typed. A separate figure shows characters without whitespace.
What is the character limit for?
It shows how many characters are left, or how many are over, for a length you choose: 60 for an SEO title, 155 for a meta description, 280 for a short post, or your own number. It does not change the text or the other counts.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. Counting happens in your browser and the text is not sent to TextMora.
